Railway Ministry gives in-principle approval to ₹16,039 cr Pune-Nashik Semi High Speed Rail Project

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The Ministry of Railways has accorded in-principle approval to the 235-km semi high-speed rail project connecting Pune to Nashik  which was in the pipeline for the last three years. This information has been shared by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after a meeting with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on 5th February 2023.

“I thank the railway minister for granting in-principle approval to the Pune-Nashik high-speed railway project. The high-speed rail between Pune and Nashik will boost development and provide seamless connectivity to the industrial zones of both cities. Our technical committee will finalise the technical details of the project and then submit it for approval by the Union cabinet,” said Fadnavis.

“Pune and Nashik are important cities of Maharashtra economically and culturally. It would be our endeavour to provide rail connectivity to these two cities,” said Union Railway Minister.

According to the proposal prepared by Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), the semi-high speed train will run at a speed of 200 kmph and stop at a total of 24 stations — eight major and 16 small ones — passing through the three districts of Maharashtra namely Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik.

In June last year, MRIDC had submitted a revised detailed project report (DPR) for the proposed Pune-Nashik Semi high-speed Rail Corridor to Ministry of Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.

MRIDC is implementing Broad Gauge rail line project between PUNE and NASHIK for a route length of about 235.15 KM. The freight trains as well as passenger trains are planned to run on this system. Freight trains axle load will be 25T at maximum speed of 110Kmph, IR Passenger trains with axle load of 17T at maximum speed of 160 kmph.

In addition to this, MRIDC has also planned to run a Broad-Gauge high-speed EMU (Electric multiple unit) at an Operational Speed of 250 kmph.
