Tender launched for survey of Chennai-Bengaluru Semi High Speed Rail Corridor

Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): The Southern Railway (SR) division of Indian railways has issued tender notice for appointment of a survey agency to conduct the final location survey for the new semi high speed rail line between Chennai Central and Bengaluru (Byappanahalli) stations.

The proposed New Semi High Speed Rail line will be designed for a speed of 220 kmph with a operational speed of 200 kmph between Chennai Central and Bengaluru (Byappanahalli station) using Aerial LIDAR survey and developing detailed final alignment, conducting traffic study, preparation of detailed plans and estimate and submission of DPR etc. The approximate length of the railway line is expected to be around 350 Klm.

A final location survey is the first important step that is carried out during detailing of any railway project. It is in this survey where multidisciplinary investigations like topographical, geotechnical, hydrological etc. are taken up and the consolidated data is used to finalise route alignment and identify land usages. Final Location Survey for New Semi High Speed Rail line between Chennai Central and Bengaluru (Byappanahalli) stations (350 KM)

Estimated Cost of Work: Rs 8,36,43,390.64

Period of Completion: 90 days

Back in 2016, China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co Ltd (CREEC) submitted a report suggesting that travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai could be reduced to less than three hours by upgrading the existing track to operate trains at 160 kmph. The estimated cost for this upgrade was around Rs 3,200 crore. Similarly, the German government also presented a feasibility study to the railway board in 2018 for a bullet train project with a maximum speed of 320 kmph on the Chennai-Arakkonam-Bengaluru-Mysuru route. But these proposals remained on paper.

The Chennai-Bengaluru (Byappanahalli) new semi high speed rail line is a proposed project aimed at improving connectivity between the two major cities in South India. Here are some of the potential benefits of this railway line:-

Reduced travel time: The semi-high-speed rail line will significantly reduce the travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru. It is expected to operate at speeds of around 160-200 kmph, which is faster than conventional trains. This would greatly benefit passengers who frequently travel between the two cities, allowing them to reach their destinations more quickly.

Improved efficiency and reliability: The new railway line will be designed to handle higher speeds, resulting in improved efficiency and reliability of train services. With fewer stops and faster travel times, it would offer a more time-effective transportation option compared to road travel or conventional trains.

Increased capacity: The semi-high-speed rail line will have the potential to accommodate more passengers and freight, thereby addressing the growing demand for transportation between Chennai and Bengaluru. This increased capacity can help ease congestion on existing modes of transportation and contribute to the economic development of both cities. Economic growth and development: Improved connectivity between Chennai and Bengaluru can further stimulate economic growth and development in the region. It can facilitate the movement of people, goods, and services, fostering trade, tourism, and business activities. The railway line can attract investment, create job opportunities, and boost local economies along its route.

Environmental benefits: Compared to other modes of transportation like road or air, railways are generally more environmentally friendly. The new semi-high-speed rail line would provide a greener transportation alternative, potentially reducing carbon emissions, traffic congestion, and dependence on fossil fuels.

Improved intercity mobility: The semi-high-speed rail line can enhance intercity mobility by providing a convenient and comfortable mode of transportation for commuters, professionals, and students who frequently travel between Chennai and Bengaluru. This can lead to increased mobility, improved work-life balance, and enhanced access to education and employment opportunities.

It’s important to note that these benefits are based on the proposed plans for the Chennai-Bengaluru semi-high-speed rail line and are subject to implementation, operational efficiency, and other factors that may arise during the construction and operation phases of the project.
