MMRDA unveils multi-model transformation plan for Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is embarking on an ambitious journey to strengthen the socio-economic fabric of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). In this strategic move, MMRDA is set to develop two pivotal Growth Centres and three Industrial Growth Centres, with an additional Growth Centre under its Special Planning Authority (SPA) at Kalyan.

Fortifying the Region's Foundation

The Kharbav Growth Centre, strategically nestled in Bhiwandi Taluka near the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation, is poised to become a magnet for investment. What makes this Centre especially appealing are the major infrastructure projects converging here. These projects include the Virar-Alibag Multi-Modal Corridor (MMC), the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (HSR), and the DFC corridor, all of which promise to transform the region.

A Hub of Progress - Kalyan Growth Centre

In a similar vein, the Kalyan Growth Centre (KGC) is projected to bloom as a vibrant hub, encompassing commercial and residential complexes, educational institutions, and more. MMRDA will play a pivotal role as the Special Planning Authority (SPA) in nurturing this Centre's growth.

Poised for Success - Poynad Growth Centre

The Poynad Growth Centre, nestled in Alibag Taluka, is a venture with immense potential. Its success is attributed to its strategic proximity to the nearly completed Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) and crucial projects like the Virar-Alibag MMC, as well as the upcoming second international airport.

Revitalizing Local Areas

The primary goal of this initiative is to rejuvenate local areas, creating fresh opportunities, particularly in sectors such as tourism, construction, real estate, and logistics. This vision is further bolstered by its strategic proximity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the forthcoming second international airport in Mumbai.

Industrial Growth Centres Driving Economic Growth

Apart from the Growth Centres, MMRDA envisions three Industrial Growth Centres - Angaon IGC, Sape IGC, and Amba IGC. These Centres are expected to act as catalysts for economic growth in their respective micro-regions. They will enhance employment opportunities, improve connectivity, and contribute significantly to industrial development, particularly in the manufacturing sector and high-end industries.

The Kalyan Growth Centre's Comprehensive Scope

The Kalyan Growth Centre, under the aegis of the SPA and MMRDA's Sub-Regional Office in Thane, encompasses ten villages in the Kalyan Taluka, spanning approximately 1089 hectares. This Centre is slated to host major township projects that align with the broader vision of comprehensive, sustainable, and robust development within MMR. The initiative is not only focused on propelling economic growth but also on enhancing the quality of life for the region's large communities. It promises a future characterized by polycentric development, dispersed job opportunities, affordable housing, and integrated health and educational infrastructures, all complemented by abundant green open spaces.

A Visionary Outlook

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, has expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "The metropolitan region of Mumbai is a robust contributor to the economy of Maharashtra and the entire nation, contributing about 4% to our country's GDP. MMR is projected to contribute a staggering 0.35 Trillion US Dollars to the Indian economy by 2028. MMRDA's new initiative propels us toward a future enriched with superior opportunities and infrastructure, all while meticulously weaving growth with environmental consciousness. We are thrilled to initiate our growth centres, anticipating immense benefits for the selected regions, once the government accords its formal approval for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority as the Special Planning Authority for upcoming growth centres in the region."

Committed to Sustainable Progress

MMRDA remains committed to advancing hand-in-hand with ecological mindfulness. They ensure that each step taken towards developmental progress is in harmonious alignment with environmental sustainability. This commitment reflects their dedication to responsible and sustainable growth.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set to undergo a remarkable transformation with the introduction of these Growth Centres and Industrial Growth Centres. The future appears bright, with opportunities for economic growth, employment, and enhanced quality of life. MMRDA's holistic approach, combined with their commitment to sustainability, ensures that this developmental stride benefits not only the region but also the nation as a whole.
