New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): Indian Railways has put forth an ambitious plan, proposing a staggering Rs 4.2 lakh crore initiative to multi-track seven high-density corridors. These crucial routes, namely Delhi-Howrah, Mumbai-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Guwahati, Delhi-Chennai, Howrah-Chennai, and Mumbai-Chennai, form the backbone of the country's rail network, facilitating the movement of millions of passengers and freight.
In a comprehensive proposal set for the Union Cabinet's consideration, the railway ministry has outlined a strategic program spanning the next ten years, from 2024-25 to 2033-34. The proposed initiative aims to tackle the surging demand for efficient transportation along these corridors by implementing crucial infrastructural developments, including the doubling and laying of third and fourth lines, along with the construction of flyovers and underpasses.
The primary objective behind this monumental proposal is to enhance the capacity of these key corridors, enabling the seamless operation of an increased number of trains. With the identified projects encompassing a total of 213 critical developments, the Indian Railways aims to prioritize 200 key projects during the initial phase, ensuring swift progress and significant improvements in rail infrastructure.
The proposal comes as a response to the mounting pressure on these critical routes, accounting for a substantial portion of the country's railway network. Despite constituting merely 16% of the entire Indian Railways network, these corridors handle a staggering 41% of the total rail traffic. The resulting congestion has severely limited the potential for introducing additional trains or enhancing their operational speeds, necessitating immediate and comprehensive infrastructural upgrades.
To facilitate the swift and efficient execution of these vital projects, the railway ministry has proposed granting additional financial powers to the Railway Board and the concerned minister. This strategic move is anticipated to streamline decision-making processes and expedite the implementation of critical infrastructural upgrades, ensuring the timely completion of the proposed initiatives within the stipulated timeline.
Indian Railways' visionary proposal to invest Rs 4.2 lakh crore in the multi-tracking of these seven high-density corridors marks a significant step towards enhancing the country's rail infrastructure and addressing the pressing demands of a rapidly growing economy. By prioritizing the development of key routes and ensuring the seamless movement of passengers and freight, the Indian Railways reaffirms its commitment to providing efficient and reliable transportation services to millions of commuters across the nation.
