Naples, Italy (Urban Transport News): Hitachi Rail, a prominent player in the global rail technology sector and a member of the IRICAV DUE Consortium, has marked a significant milestone with the signing of a €1.8 billion contract. This contract, building on the foundation of a €2.4 billion phase one award in 2020, will bring forth a cutting-edge transformation to the Verona-Bivio Vicenza rail line.

The centerpiece of this transformative project is the implementation of Hitachi Rail's European Rail Transport Management System (ERTMS) digital signalling technology. This advanced system, known for its prowess in digital rail control, utilizes radio signals to communicate between trains and tracks, ensuring precise monitoring of speed and automatic activation of emergency brakes if safety hazards or speed limits are breached.

By incorporating ERTMS, the Verona-Bivio Vicenza line will be able to accommodate more trains operating at higher speeds, greatly enhancing reliability and passenger experience. This revolutionary signalling system paves the way for increased train density and improved service efficiency.

One of the most noteworthy features of ERTMS is its contribution to railway interoperability. The technology replaces traditional track-based signalling systems with radio communications between trains and the Radio Block Center (RBC). This not only streamlines installation and maintenance processes but also facilitates seamless cross-border train operations, fostering a harmonious and integrated rail network across Europe.

Luca D'Aquila, Chief Operating Officer of Hitachi Rail Group and CEO of Hitachi Rail Italy, expressed his pride in the project, stating, "Our ERTMS digital signalling will deliver an enhanced experience for both customers and passengers. This system will enable safer, faster, and more efficient travel, redefining rail connectivity."

The consortium behind this remarkable achievement comprises Hitachi Rail (17.05%) and Webuild Italia S.p.A. (82.95%). With a proven track record in contributing to the construction of Italy's High Speed/Capacity Lines, Hitachi Rail continues to push the boundaries of innovation, propelling the nation's rail infrastructure into a new era of excellence. This new 76.4km rail line not only connects Verona and Padua but also completes the vital rail link between Milan and Venice.

As the IRICAV DUE Consortium, in collaboration with Hitachi Rail, embarks on this ambitious project, the future of rail travel in Vicenza looks promising, characterized by enhanced speed, capacity, and efficiency.
