New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, V. K. Saxena, has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to conduct a survey and identify viable locations for the construction of ropeways or cable cars spanning the Yamuna River. The DDA has been asked to submit a preliminary report within the next month, outlining feasible sites for this eco-friendly transport initiative.
The proposed project aims to introduce cable cars with a 50-passenger capacity, operating from morning to night. These cable cars will offer an environmentally sustainable mode of transport, providing an alternative to polluting vehicles. Strategically positioned near metro stations on both sides of the Yamuna, the installations will ensure seamless connectivity while avoiding the encroachment of floodplain areas.
Emphasizing sustainability, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted that the initiative is designed to reduce reliance on vehicles like buses, autos, and private cars, significantly reducing road congestion and promoting cleaner air. The ropeways will serve as a non-polluting mode of transport, alleviating the strain on Delhi's road infrastructure while encouraging walking and physical activity among residents.
In addition to its environmental benefits, the cable car project will shorten travel distances between key residential and commercial areas, improving accessibility and saving commuters valuable time. In areas like Baansera and Asita, where the DDA has already developed green spaces along the Yamuna, parking spaces are intentionally placed at a distance to encourage walking, reinforcing the project's commitment to health-conscious and sustainable urban planning.
With the project expected to enhance public transport connectivity and promote a cleaner, healthier environment, the initiative aligns with Delhi's broader goals of creating a more eco-friendly, efficient urban transport network
