UMTC begins survey for 82.5km new stretch of Pune Metro Phase 2

Pune, India (Urban Transport News): The Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) and Data Corp Traffic Private Limited have commneced survey work for preparation of detailed project report (DPR) for 82.5-km new stretch of Pune Metro's Phase 2. Construction work of first phase of Pune Metro Rail proejct is nearing completion and operations are slated to start soon on its priority sections.

“Maha-Metro had appointed agencies to conduct the DPR on 82.5km stretch. Officials would visit housing societies, commercial complexes and various small and big business houses to understand and listen to the expectations of Punekars from the public transport body,” said Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro).

Maha-Metro has appealed to Punekars to participate in the survey and provide information as it will help to include residents opinion while finalising the DPR of the new stretch. The survey questionnaire for residents include frequency and modes of travel by people and the overall opinion about public transport among others.

After completing the DPR, Maha-Metro will submit it to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and later it will be submitted to Maharashtra government and central government. The PMC had already given its approval to extend the metro route between Swargate and Katraj. Swargate to Katraj would become the part of extension of the Pune Metro's Phase 1.

The phase 2 corridors would be a total length of approx. 82.5 km encompassing Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (1.5 km) Ramwadi to Wagholi (12 km) Hadapsar to Kharadi (5 km) Swargate to Hadapsar (7km) Khadakwasla to Swargate (13 km) SNDT to Warje (8km) HCMTR in PMC (PMC, 36km).

As the metro work is undertaken at a good speed, there is a demand to execute the project in various parts of the city. The general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation accepted various routes suggested by the elected members.

As per the new Metro Rail Policy, if there is an extension of any route, the Centre gives only ten per cent of project cost funding. Now as all these extensions would get submitted in the second phase, it is the policy of the central government to give a 20 per cent share of the total project cost.
