Istanbul, Turkey (Urban Transport News): Turkey achieved a significant milestone in its transportation infrastructure development with the inauguration of a new high-speed train line linking Istanbul to the central Anatolian city of Sivas. This momentous occasion marks a substantial leap forward in Turkey's efforts to modernize its rail network and enhance connectivity across the country.
The newly inaugurated Istanbul-Sivas high-speed rail line, spanning approximately 700 kilometers (430 miles), offers travelers a swift journey of seven hours and 18 minutes, providing an efficient transportation option between these key destinations. Each train is capable of accommodating up to 483 passengers, facilitating seamless travel experiences for commuters and tourists alike, as reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency.
At the inauguration ceremony held in Istanbul, Osman Boyraz, Turkey’s deputy minister of transport and infrastructure, underscored the strategic significance of the new railway link. He emphasized Turkey’s steadfast commitment to advancing its railway infrastructure, citing substantial investments totaling $57 billion over the past 22 years. These investments have substantially expanded Turkey’s railway network, increasing the total line length from 10,948 kilometers to 13,919 kilometers, with a notable addition of 2,251 kilometers of high-speed rail.
The introduction of high-speed rail services in Turkey began in 2009 with the launch of the country's first high-speed rail line, connecting the capital city, Ankara, with Eskisehir. Subsequently, in 2014, the line was extended to Istanbul, creating a comprehensive route spanning 533 kilometers. Notably, segments of the Ankara-Istanbul line were constructed through collaboration between Chinese and Turkish companies, reflecting international cooperation in Turkey's infrastructure development initiatives.
Since its inception in 2009, high-speed trains have revolutionized the landscape of transportation in Turkey, catering to the needs of approximately 85 million passengers, according to Deputy Minister Boyraz. This substantial ridership underscores the growing popularity and efficiency of high-speed rail as a preferred mode of travel among the Turkish populace.
The inauguration of the Istanbul-Sivas high-speed rail link represents a significant achievement for Turkey, signaling its dedication to fostering modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions for its citizens and visitors. As Turkey continues to prioritize infrastructure development and connectivity enhancement, such initiatives play a crucial role in driving economic growth, facilitating tourism, and fostering regional integration.
