Pune Metro completes underwater tunnel below Mutha River

Pune, India (Urban Transport News): The project team of Gulermak – Tata Projects JV on April 26, 2021, has completed the construction of the first underground metro tunnel below the Mutha River bed for the Pune Metro Rail project. This information was shared by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) through its social media channels.

"Another FIRST for Pune! There are tens of bridges over the Mutha river, some of them centuries old. Pune Metro has constructed Pune's first underwater metro tunnel below the Mutha river bed for the underground route. Tunnels of ~240 mtrs. by Mutha & 223 mtrs. by Mula Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) completed between Civil Court & Budhwar Peth," tweeted the official handle of Maha Metro.

In March 2021, Gulermak – Tata Projects JV team has started tunneling work beneath the riverbed through the Terratec EPB machines named Mutha and Mula for the third 680-meter drive towards Budhwar Peth station. This is part of the 3.78 km package UGC-01 between Range Hills Ramp – Budhwar Peth.

Now Pune Metro has become the fourth metro project which has built an underwater metro tunnel underneath river bed after Chennai Metro, Kolkata Metro and Mumbai Metro Rail projects. In April 2019, Chennai Metro started construction of an underwater tunnel underneath Adyar River for its Phase 2 project while Mumbai Metro has also completed tunneling work below the Mithi River for Line-3. Kolkata Metro is constructing the largest underwater metro tunnel below the Hooghly river.
