Official trial run commenced on 9-km priority corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail Project

Kanpur, India (Urban Transport News): The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) today commenced official trial run of metro train on 9-km priority corridor (IIT Kanpur - Motijhil) of Kanpur Metro Rail Project. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has flagged off the trial run of first trainset (consist of three coaches) from Govt. Polytechnic Depot (near Gurudev Chauraha) and travelled in the train.

During his visit to Operation Control Centre (OCC) and the depot, UPMRC Managing Director Kumar Keshav has brifed him about the progress of the project. The train was run at the speed of 60 km per hour from 11.00 AM to 04.00 PM between IIT Kanpur station and cross over near Geeta Nagar Metro Station. Alstom Transport is supplying the trains for this project.

The ceremony was attended by Satish Mahana, Industrial Development Minister; Smt. Neelima Katiyar,  State Minister for Higher Education, Science & Technology; Satyadev Pachauri, Member of Parliament from Kanpur; Durga Shankar Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and other deginated officials from the State Government and UPMRC.

Addressing the program, Chief Minister said, "Kanpur is going to get a new metro rail service with state-of-the-art facilities. With the launch of metro in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh will become the first state in the country to provide metro facility in its five cities."

“Kanpur, an industrial city, is going to become a metro city in the real sense, not only in terms of population but also in terms of world class transport service and for this I congratulate the residents of the city and the team of UPMRC in advance. We also got continuous support from the central government and as a result we were able to achieve this feat in less than two years. I appreciate the UPMRC for starting the trial on the primary section before the stipulated time limit despite two waves of covid. Soon, world class metro facilities will be made available to the public through this project,” he added.

Construction works of 9-km priority corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail Project was commenced on November 15, 2019, after laying foundation stone of the project by Chief Minister Yogi Adityath. The Afcons Infrastructure Limited was awarded the contract for design and construction of this priority section and construction has been completed within the timeframe i.e. in less than two years under the supervision of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.

Interacting with the media personnel, Kumar Keshav said that the UPMRC is expecting to complete the work of entire priority section in 1.5 months so that commercial run of metro train service commenced in the city in next month. The finishing work of metro stations is being completed in full swing and all the stations in the primary section will be fully ready in the said period.

After completion o trial run, the metro train services will be opened to the public on 9-km elevated priority section (IIT to Motijhil) with 9 metro stations. This section is part of 23.8 km (Corridor 1) of Kanpur Metro Rail Project which wil connect IIT Kanpur to Naubasta with 21 stations.

The 8.6 km long Corridor 2 will connect Chandrashekhar Azad University to Barra-8 with 8 metro stations.

The estimated cost of Phase 1 of Kanpur Metro Rail project is Rs 11,07.48 crores with the deadline of five years.
