Mumbai (Urban Transport News): The Reliance Infrastructure-led Metro One Operation Pvt Ltd (MOOPL) operating the Versova-Andheri- Ghatkopar metro line, has successfully completed five years of metro rail service on Saturday, June 8. The line 1 of Mumbai Metro Rail project which was started on June 8, 2014, has completed five years of service, running 6.17 lakh trips and carrying over 540 million commuters, which is equivalent to transporting Mumbai's population over 40 times.
The company has recorded zero accident and fatality during these operational periods. The elevated metro corridor which covers a distance of 11.4 kilometres has 12 stations and one depot at D N Nagar with 16 train sets operational currently. The metro services are provided at a gap of 3.5 minutes in peak hours and 8 minutes in non-peak hours. The spokesperson from MOOPL said,
We are extremely happy to reach this milestone and appreciate receiving the overwhelming response and affection from Mumbaikars who helped us become a lifeline in this belt. We shall continue to serve the city with the same zeal and dedication for the remaining concession period of 24 years.
Line 1 of the Mumbai Metro Rail Project, also known as Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Line, is part of the metro system for the city of Mumbai. The corridor connects the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. It was built at an estimated cost of ₹4,321 crores and is operated by the Metro One Operation Pvt Ltd (MOOPL) on a 5-year contract. Earlier introducing the metro services, the Versova-Ghatkopar route had no suburban rail link and was serviced by either BEST buses, autos or taxis.
The first metro service was flagged off by Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, along with Reliance Infrastructure Chairman Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani, on 8 June 2014 from Versova station.
