Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is set for a massive infrastructure upgrade, with Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) announcing an investment of ₹10,000 crore to modernize and enhance the airport’s facilities. The ambitious development plan, revealed in a press release on Tuesday, aims to improve passenger experience, operational efficiency, and sustainability.
MIAL plans to redevelop Terminal 1 to upgrade its structural integrity and increase capacity. This project will modernize the aging Terminals 1A (over 30 years old) and 1B (more than 60 years old), integrating state-of-the-art infrastructure and enhanced passenger facilities for long-term sustainability.
Terminal 2 will undergo a major technological transformation with self-baggage drop systems, CTIX hand baggage screening, and full-body scanners to optimize security processes and improve passenger flow.
The airport will upgrade its airside infrastructure, including runway maintenance, apron improvements, and taxiway enhancements. These measures aim to boost aircraft movement efficiency and streamline flight operations.
CSMIA is embracing next-generation digital innovations to enhance passenger convenience. Planned upgrades include e-gates as part of the DigiYatra initiative, Fast Track Immigration via the Trusted Traveller Programme, and IoT-driven solutions to ensure seamless and secure travel experiences.
The airport is making significant strides toward sustainability, with a focus on transitioning to electric vehicles, implementing energy-efficient operations, strengthening water conservation initiatives, and accelerating its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2029.
This investment underscores CSMIA’s commitment to maintaining its status as one of India’s busiest and most advanced airports. With enhanced infrastructure, cutting-edge digitalization, and a strong sustainability agenda, Mumbai Airport is set to redefine passenger experience and operational excellence in the coming years.
