L&T wins Rs 1035 crore civil contract of Chennai Metro's Kodambakkam-Porur section

Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on 8th December 2020 opened financial bids for the first civil contract for the construction of a 7.9 km elevated stretch (Kodambakkam-Porur) of phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project.

According to the bid results, Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) has been emerged as the lowest bidder after beating another two bidders. The financial position of bidders are as under:-

  • Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T): Rs 1,035.30 Crore (L1)
  • Hindustan Construction Company – KEC International JV: Rs 1,099.15 Crore (L2)
  • NCC Limited: Rs 1,449.96 Crore (L3)

The 7.9 km stretch is part of Corridor 4 of the proposed 118.9 km Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. The 26.1km long Corridor-4 will connect Light House to Poonamallee Bus Depot through 31 stations.

"We have just opened the financial bids. Now the evaluation process will begin following which it will be sent to the bank for clearance and later to the board before the contract is awarded. This process will take some time.," said an official.

The tender for this contract package (C4-ECV-01) was invited in July 2020 with an estimated cost of work of Rs 800 crores. However, L&T had quoted a 29.41% higher amount than Chennai Metro's estimate. The technical bids were opened in October month. If the contract awarded to the L&T, the contractor has to complete the work in 1080 days as per contract terms.

The scope of work includes the construction of Elevated Metro Stations at Power House, Vadapalani, Saligramam, Avichi School, Alwartiru Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, Alapapakkam Junction, Porur Junction & Associated Viaduct from Chainage 10027.102 to Chainage 17982.240 & all associated works.
