Port Luise, Mauritius (Urban Transport News): Indian major infrastructure firm Larsen & Toubro Construction has secured a civil contract from Metro Express Ltd for the construction of a 3.4 km light rail corridor (Phase 2A) under its expansion project. The exact order value not yet disclosed by L&T Construction. However, as per the regulatory filing made by the company, it has been said that the order value ranges from Rs 1000-2500 crores.
The contract involves the construction of a fully integrated light rail-based Urban Transit System from Rose Hill Interchange towards Ebene reaching Reduit near the University of Mauritius. The extension will connect the densely populated areas of Ebene Cybercity and the University of Mauritius and give added impetus to the development of the island nation.
The extension of Metro Express will involve the construction of three new stations, viaducts and bridges, track works (with substantial ballastless track including plinth, embedded Et grass tracks), DC electric Traction Systems, Ticketing and Passenger Information Systems and integration with road traffic through advanced signaling systems.
It is pertinent to mention here that L&T Construction is already executing the 26 km Mainline LRT network connecting Curepipe to Immigration Square in Port Louis. The company has successfully completed the 12 km priority section from Rosehill to Victoria station, which is under commercial operation since January 2020.
The first phase of the Metro Express project was inaugurated on the 2nd of October 2019 by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. However, the commercial run of light metro rail commenced on 10 January 2020.
