Jindal Stainless and JBM Auto partner to fabricate Stainless Steel in Electric Buses

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a groundbreaking initiative to spearhead the eco-mobility revolution in India, Jindal Stainless, the nation’s largest stainless steel manufacturer, has forged a strategic partnership with JBM Auto Ltd., India’s foremost electric bus manufacturer. The collaboration aims to fabricate over 500 energy-efficient and lightweight stainless steel electric buses, heralding a new era of sustainable transportation.

Under this alliance, Jindal Stainless will supply JT Tubes, crafted from low-carbon, chromium-manganese austenitic stainless steel, to JBM Auto. Notably, this material, also referred to as N7 in the Bureau of Indian Standards specification 6911, boasts three times the strength of the carbon steel conventionally used in bus fabrication. This transition from carbon steel to stainless steel is poised to revolutionize the electric bus manufacturing landscape, offering enhanced performance, durability, and strength while significantly reducing the overall weight of the vehicles.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed enthusiasm about shaping the future of sustainable mobility in India through this partnership. He highlighted the manifold benefits of utilizing stainless steel, including reduced energy consumption and a diminished carbon footprint, owing to the material's lightweight properties. Furthermore, its corrosion-resistant nature promises extended longevity and reduced maintenance costs, making it a cost-effective solution over the entire lifecycle of the buses.

Nishant Arya, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of JBM Auto Ltd., underscored the company's commitment to innovation and clean mobility. By embracing smart, connected, and electric solutions, JBM Auto aims to drive the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and establish an end-to-end electric mobility ecosystem. Arya expressed confidence that the collaboration with Jindal Stainless will play a pivotal role in advancing their mission of providing sustainable and intelligent public commuting solutions.

In line with their commitment to sustainability, JBM Auto is actively transitioning its export orders for electric buses to energy-efficient stainless steel variants. These buses, tailored for domestic operations in Telangana, will be fabricated using JT Tubes supplied by Jindal Stainless Steelway Limited (JSSL), the domestic service arm specializing in customization and value addition. Commencing fabrication this month, JBM Auto's stainless steel buses are poised to set new benchmarks in performance and durability.

JBM Auto Ltd., a flagship company of the $2.6 billion global Indian conglomerate JBM Group, boasts over four decades of excellence in automotive innovation and value creation. The group's comprehensive EV ecosystem, 'JBM E-Verse,' integrates electric vehicles, battery technology, fast charging infrastructure, and power electronics, positioning it as a leading player in the electric mobility segment.

Jindal Stainless, with an annual turnover of INR 35,700 crore (USD 4.30 billion) in FY23, is ramping up its manufacturing capabilities to achieve a 3 million-ton annual melt capacity in FY24. With two manufacturing facilities in India and a global presence spanning 15 countries, Jindal Stainless is committed to driving sustainable growth and innovation in the stainless steel industry.

As India's leading stainless steel manufacturer, Jindal Stainless continues to set new standards of excellence, reaffirming its position as a pioneer in sustainable mobility solutions.
