Indian Railways to launch hydrogen powered Vande Bharat Trains for common people

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): India's National Transporter Indian Railways is planning to introduce hydrogen-fuel cell powered eco-freindly Vande Bharat Express trains from the end of 2023. These trains will be known as 'Vande Metro' Hydrogen Train and will be accessible for common people.

"These Vande Metro trains will be manufactured in such large numbers that across the country, the trains which were of the 1950s and 1960s designs will all be replaced," said Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishanaw during an interaction with media.

He said that the new trains will benefit the middle and lower class section of the population, as the high-end section is not the focus of Vande Metro hydrogen trains. The Vande Metro trains will be manufactured in large numbers.

“Rich people can take care of themselves. The central government, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi focuses on the lower- and middle-income class of the population who cannot afford... The Prime Minister wants to make a transformative change in every Indian’s life," the Minister said.

The Minister highlighted that Vande Metro, like Vande Bharat trains, is being designed by Indian engineers. The design of the Vande Metro train would be completed by May-June 2023, and the first fully built and designed hydrogen train will be rolled out by the end of 2023.

“We are designing and the design should be out by anywhere by May or June. We are designing world-class Vande Metro trains which will be a Great Leap Forward,” he said.

The Indian Railways is working on the design of the Vande Bharat 3.0 series, which will include a sleeper class and will be deployed on longer routes. The Railways is currently adding 12 KMs of track a day, a significant improvement from 4 kms a day during the UPA regime, he added.

In August this year, Germany became the first country in the world to run hydrogen-powered trains. These trains emit no pollution and produce little noise, emitting just steam and evaporated water.
