Weinfelden, Switzerland (Urban Transport News): In a pioneering move towards sustainable rail travel, Ferrovie della Calabria (FdC), the Italian railway operator, has placed an order for three additional narrow-gauge hydrogen trains from Stadler. This procurement is part of a larger framework agreement inked in 2023 for up to 15 hydrogen-powered trains. Designed for regional and local transport networks in Calabria, Italy, these cutting-edge trains mark Stadler as the first manufacturer globally to produce narrow-gauge trains with hydrogen propulsion.

Expanding Hydrogen Fleet in Calabria

The recent agreement, signed at the beginning of the new year, signifies FdC's commitment to advancing the adoption of hydrogen-powered trains within its narrow-gauge network (950 mm). The three new trains are set to commence operations in Calabria in 2026, complementing the hydrogen-powered fleet commissioned under the initial framework agreement in July 2023. The comprehensive collaboration between Stadler and FdC includes the delivery and maintenance of a total of 15 trains with hydrogen propulsion.

Ernesto Ferraro, CEO of FdC, expressed his satisfaction with the continued partnership with Stadler, emphasizing the investment as a strategic move towards the company's ongoing modernization. The purchase of additional hydrogen-powered trains aligns with FdC's broader vision of becoming a modern and sustainable transport company in the next three years. The collaboration with the Region of Calabria and relevant Ministries has been instrumental in securing the necessary resources to support FdC's industrial plan.

Stadler's Role in Decarbonizing Rail Transport

Stadler's involvement in the decarbonization of rail transport in Italy is underscored by its groundbreaking role as the first railway manufacturer to develop and produce hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge multiple units. Ansgar Brockmeyer, Executive Vice President of Marketing & Sales at Stadler, expressed pride in FdC's renewed commission, emphasizing their joint efforts in driving the decarbonization agenda in Italy. The narrow-gauge hydrogen trains represent a world first and contribute to the vision of sustainable rail transport on narrow-gauge lines globally.

Maurizio Oberti, Marketing & Sales Director for Italy, highlighted the significance of this additional order in consolidating Stadler's position in Italy. The company's diverse portfolio, ranging from trams and metros to long-distance vehicles and locomotives, has gained traction across various Italian regions and operators.

Technical Insight: Hydrogen-Powered Narrow-Gauge Trains

The hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge trains consist of two passenger cars and a power pack. The lightweight aluminum structures of the cars enhance energy efficiency. The power pack houses fuel cells, hydrogen tanks, and other technical equipment. With a total length of approximately 50 meters, each train offers 89 seats for a total of 155 passengers. The low-floor access ensures full accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility, pushchairs, and bicycles.

Stadler's Commitment to Sustainable Rail Travel

Stadler's alternative drive solutions play a crucial role in making rail travel more environmentally friendly, especially in regions where alternatives to diesel were limited. In addition to hydrogen-powered trains, Stadler continues to develop battery-powered trains, enabling emission-free operation on routes without overhead lines. The FdC contract in Italy represents a milestone for Stadler, as it designs and manufactures the first hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge multiple unit for the Calabria region. The trains are anticipated to enter service in 2026, contributing to the broader ecological transition initiative.
