Govt plans driverless pod taxi to connect Jewar International Airport with Greater Noida

Noida, India (Urban Transport News): The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has decided to connect the upcoming international airport in Jewar with Greater Noida using driverless pod taxis. The Driverless Pod Taxi is a popular mode of public transport in many western countries that can accommodate four to six people per car.

The Authority said that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been given the task to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to develop the pod taxi service connecting Greater Noida and Jewar International Airport. The estimated cost of the driverless pod taxi project would be Rs 50-60 crore per kilometer.

Apart from this, the DMRC has also been given the task to prepare a revised DPR for a metro link to connect the proposed Noida International Airport in Jewar to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

"We already have Metro connectivity till Greater Noida but Jewar is about 25 kilometers from Greater Noida city. To bridge this gap, pod taxis are being considered. Pod taxis are a revolutionary mode of transport widely being used in many western countries," said Dhirendra Singh, a BJP leader and MLA from Jewar in Greater Noida.

At present, the upcoming airport in Jewar is connected through two major expressways, the Yamuna Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway, which connects northern and southern areas around the National Capital Region (NCR).

In December of last year, the Uttar Pradesh Government had approved the bid by Zurich Airport International for the development of the Noida International Airport in Jewar.

"The upcoming airport is easily approachable through road from Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and a large area of Uttar Pradesh. To help reduce travel time, we are working on pod taxis that will give a hassle-free travel experience to the commuters. Also, as the Film City will be developed in the Jewar area, the pod taxi service will be of great help in connectivity," said Arun Veer Singh, Chief Executive Officer of YEIDA.
