New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a landmark move to boost water tourism, the Delhi government and the Centre have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce boat services along the Yamuna River. This exciting initiative will offer boat rides on a 4-kilometer stretch between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, providing both residents and tourists with a fresh perspective on the city’s waterways.
For years, the Yamuna River has remained underutilized as a resource for both transportation and leisure. However, this ambitious project aims to transform the river into a vibrant hub for tourism, reviving its potential as a scenic and sustainable waterway.
Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the transformative potential of this project, stating that it would not only bring a modern identity to Delhi but also focus on cleanliness, beautification, and infrastructural development. She envisions the Yamuna ghats evolving into cultural and artistic spaces, where visitors can engage in a variety of activities while appreciating the city’s heritage.
The initiative also underscores the government’s long-term commitment to cleaning the river and enhancing its surrounding infrastructure. "Our goal is to make the Yamuna an iconic destination for locals and tourists alike," said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. "With sustained efforts towards river cleaning and development, we aim to create a vibrant ecosystem around the river."
This development positions Delhi alongside other global cities that have successfully integrated river tourism into their urban landscape, offering a unique way to experience the city. The boat services will provide an eco-friendly and scenic alternative for transport while fostering a new tourism sector for the city.
With the Yamuna set to become a focal point for leisure and cultural activities, Delhi is poised to redefine how cities connect with their rivers, blending modernity with tradition in this new water tourism venture.
