New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a major push towards sustainable urban mobility, the Delhi government has unveiled the Delhi EV Policy 2.0, aiming to transition 95% of new vehicle registrations to electric vehicles (EVs) by 2027. The policy outlines a structured phase-out of CNG-powered auto-rickshaws, taxis, and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) in favor of electric alternatives.
A significant focus of the policy is the replacement of CNG-powered vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, taxis, and LCVs, with electric alternatives. This transition is expected to reduce emissions and enhance air quality in the capital.
In an effort to make public transport more sustainable, the policy mandates a complete transition of Delhi’s bus fleet to electric buses, significantly lowering the city's carbon footprint.
The Delhi government plans to substantially increase the number of public charging stations across the city. New buildings and public spaces will be required to include EV charging points, and fast-charging corridors will be established along major routes such as the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road to support EV adoption.
To encourage widespread EV adoption, the government is offering purchase incentives for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, e-light commercial vehicles, and e-trucks. These incentives will help make EVs more accessible to a broader section of the population.
A new State EV Fund will finance incentives and other initiatives under the policy. The fund will be sourced through green levies, pollution cess, and aggregator license fees.
Stricter regulatory measures will be introduced to accelerate fleet electrification for commercial transport operators, ensuring compliance with Delhi’s clean mobility goals.
The policy also emphasizes skill development and employment generation in areas such as EV sales, servicing, and battery management, contributing to economic growth alongside environmental benefits.
Delhi’s Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh has reviewed the policy, stating that it provides a clear roadmap for accelerating the city's transition to electric mobility. The initiative positions Delhi as a national leader in EV adoption and sets a benchmark for other cities across India.
With an integrated approach focusing on infrastructure expansion, financial support, and regulatory measures, the Delhi EV Policy 2.0 is set to transform the capital’s transportation landscape, making it cleaner, greener, and more sustainable for future generations.
