Kanpur, India (Urban Transport News): Kumar Keshav, Managing Director of UP Metro Rail Corporation has said that the work of the first two corridors of the first phase of Kanpur Metro is targeted to be completed by 2024. The survey for underground work has already started near Phulbagh, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central, with the priority section being built between IIT to Motijheel. The work is also likely to begin by the end of this year.
In the presence of Kumar Keshav, the first Pier Cap was placed on Pillar No-9 of priority section being constructed on GT Road on 2nd March 2020 at 6.30 am. After this, the whole team surveyed Phulbagh, Nayaganj and Ghantaghar areas. Talking to media persons, Keshav said that more than 600 piles have been erected in about three and a half months' time. 42 pillars have been prepared. The construction of 9-km long priority section is going full swing in parallel to the railway line. There are several level crossings on the route. In the midst of this problem, the challenge is to continue the work at full speed.
According to Kumar Keshav, the work of the remaining portion of the first corridor will be started in the center of the city after Motijhil. UPMRC will float tenders for underground work soon. This work will also begin by the end of this year. The major challenge is the old dot drains and houses in Nayaganj and surrounding areas. Adequate space is also needed to build the metro stations. There is an effort to start work on every side in 2021.
The work of the first two phases of the Kanpur Metro will be completed in 2024, but by then Kanpur will have expanded a lot. In such a situation, the first two corridors will not be limited to just 32.4 km in length and 30 stations. These have to be expanded. Like Delhi and Lucknow, Kanpur Metro also has to extract the expenses related to operations from day one. The fare will also be like Lucknow Metro. The fare is currently considered to be Rs 2.8 per km. The number of passengers in Lucknow is increasing every month.
