Systra submits feasibility study report of Coimbatore Metro Rail project

Coimbatore (Urban Transport News): French consulting firm, Systra MVA India which was entrusted to conduct the feasibility study of the proposed metro rail project in Coimbatore has submitted its report to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). The report will be sent to the Tamil Nadu government after review by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited.

Once the state cabinet gives its approval for the study, a detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared working out the nitty-gritty of the project as well as the financial outlay. The Systra Group has also approached the Coimbatore district administration and the city municipal corporation to furnish details about development work to be implemented in the city including state and national highways roads.

The state government is planning to construct a 10.6-km long flyover from Uppilipalayam to SITRA. Presently many road and flyover works are carrying out by state highways and national highways departments in the urban and rural areas of Coimbatore. According to the feasibility study report, the Coimbatore Metro rail project would be implemented in four corridors with a total distance of 136 km. The details of corridors are-

  • Corridor-I: The first corridor would start from Ukkadam and end at Kaniyur covering 26 km
  • Corridor-II: The second corridor would cover 24 km from Ukkadam to Pilichi near Karamadai on Mettupalayam Road.
  • Corridor-III: The third corridor would cover 42 km from Thanneerpandal on Thadagam Road to Karanampettai on Trichy Road, and
  • Corridor-IV: The fourth corridor would be 44 km from Karunya Nagar to Ganeshapuram.

According to the sources, these corridors were planned based on vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the city’s main roads including Trichy Road, Sathyamangalam Road, Avinashi Road, and Mettupalayam Road. Based on the details provided by the district administration and the corporation, the selected firm would prepare the detailed project report (DPR).

“After the respective departments furnish the information to the private engineering company, it would prepare a detailed project report (DPR)", said a senior officer of CMRL. In 2013, Dr. E. Sreedharan (popularly known as Metroman) had conducted a survey from Upplipalayam to Coimbatore International Airport (CIA) and Upplipalayam to Thudiyalur and announced that to reduce heavy traffic in the city, metro rail project can be implemented on these two corridors.

Coimbatore MP PR Natarajan also urged the state government for speedy implementation of the Coimbatore metro rail project. He said that the city needs a metro rail system but the government has been constructing flyovers on many stretches. The detailed project (DPR) should be very transparent and a public hearing should be conducted before implementing the metro rail project.

In the detailed project report (DPR), the consulting firm will include all possible routes of the Coimbatore metro rail project including the estimated budget, alignment, number and names of stations, elevated or underground corridors and other requirements to build the metro rail system.
