Sanjay Swarup assumes charge as Chairman & Managing Director of CONCOR

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News):  Sanjay Swarup has officially taken charge as the Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), a prestigious Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. His tenure began on October 1, 2023, marking a significant development in the leadership of CONCOR.

Swarup brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role. He is a distinguished alumnus of IIT Roorkee, holding a B.E. (Hons.) degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Additionally, he holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management (PGDM) from IIM Bangalore. His illustrious career is further enriched by his association with the 1990 Batch of the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS).

Prior to assuming the position of CMD, Swarup served as a Director (Business Development) on the Board of CONCOR since September 2016. During his tenure as Director, he played a pivotal role in overseeing various aspects of CONCOR's operations, including Marketing, Operations, Infrastructure development, and Strategic planning. Under his leadership, CONCOR has thrived as a leading multimodal logistics company in India, responsible for managing approximately 80% of the company's business.

Swarup's expertise extends to the design, operation, and management of Dry ports and Multi-Modal Logistics Parks (MMLPs). He possesses a deep understanding of Railway operations, commercial functions, and information technology. Some of his notable achievements during his tenure as Director include:

  • The design and commissioning of 15 greenfield MMLPs, each valued at INR 3 billion.
  • Implementation of various IT initiatives within the company, including KYCL, Logistics App, Digital workplace solution, and AI-based TMS.
  • Introduction of innovative marketing strategies such as business solutions, long-term agreements, and credit policies, positioning CONCOR as a market leader.
  • Optimization of Time-tabled container trains, leading to significant cost savings on empty flat wagons.
  • Streamlined intermodal operations to Nepal and Bangladesh.
  • Active involvement in the operation and management of the only rail-connected Dry port in Nepal.
  • Facilitated the export of multimodal cargo to Iran using CONCOR-owned containers.
  • Collaboration with a Japanese company to introduce passive cooling technology in India.
  • Implementation of a chat-based customer grievance system, ensuring continuous cargo visibility to customers.
  • Played a key role in restructuring CONCOR from a 3-tier to a 2-tier organization, enhancing administrative efficiency and achieving financial savings.

Swarup's dedication to the field is evident through his extensive training at renowned institutions, including Maxwell School of Syracuse University (USA) and Antwerp Port in Belgium. Additionally, he has been associated with various prestigious organizations such as the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Asian Institute of Transport Development (AITD), Centre for Transportation Research and Management (CTRAM), and All India Management Association (AIMA).

Under his leadership, CONCOR is expected to continue its journey of excellence in the field of logistics and supply chain management, contributing significantly to India's transportation infrastructure.
