Mumbai Metro 3: Cross-passage collapsed, 1 worker died another injured

Mumbai (Urban Transport News): Amidst battle on land for the metro car shed for Mumbai Metro 3 in ongoing, a major accident on under-construction tunnel site took place on Friday. A portion of the emergency exit (cross-passage) in the metro tunnel suddenly collapsed. A worker died on spot and another was injured when a portion (cross-passage) of the emergency exit of the Mumbai metro line-3 collapsed while they were working near it. The accident took place at an under-construction metro tunnel site on the corridor between Powai and Aarey.

This is part of Contract Package 7 of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor (Mumbai Metro 3). Sources from the project implementing body Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) said that the worker who died was crushed under a large piece of rock that fell on him when the exit collapsed. They informed that the injuries to the second worker are minor and he is now safe. During using a machine called rock splitter to break through a rock mass, the exits suddenly collapsed.

Due to this a large piece of rock from the tunnel face collapsed and fell, trapping the two. An MMRC spokesperson said that the incident is being investigated by the contractors and the general consultants of Mumbai Metro 3 project. He also informed that the family of the deceased will be compensated as per extant policy. Mumbai Metro 3 (Aqua Line), also known as Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro corridor, is one of such key projects to improve the transportation scenario in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The fully underground metro corridor will cover a distance of 33.5 km running along Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ envisages decongesting the traffic situation in Greater Mumbai Area.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRC) is the nodal agency responsible for the implementation of Mumbai Metro 3 project. The MMRC has been constituted as a special purpose vehicle with JV of the Govt. of India and the Government of Maharashtra on equal sharing basis.
