MMRDA proposes double-Decker corridor on Mumbai Metro Line 9

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): Getting inspired with the Nagpur Metro model, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is now planning to build a double-decker corridor on the stretch of Kashimira road (Metro Line 9) by 2022. To implement the new model, MMRDA would have to pump an additional of Rs 217 crore to provide a double-decker viaduct, where flyovers for automobiles will be built on the first level and the metro line will run on the second level of the much-awaited Mumbai Metro-9 (Dahisar - Bhayandar) route.

The corridor will have a multi-layered transport facility with the metro line on the upper deck and a flyover on the lower deck above the existing road. MMRDA has also commenced soil testing and construction work on Mumbai Metro-9. The work was started on the eve of the assembly elections last year nine months after the digital foundation stone laying ceremony flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 18, 2019. Recently, a delegation of civic and MMRDA officials along with Member of the Legislative Assembly Pratap Sarnaik conducted a site inspection to chalk out an elaborate roadmap of the upgraded project and to speed up the ongoing work. “Traffic density is increasing every passing day.

The multi-level metro model with elevated roads will help to ease congestion for the next 50 years", said Pratap Sarnaik, MLA from Ovala-Majiwada. The Maharashtra state cabinet had approved two new metro lines including Metro-9 with an estimated project cost of Rs 5,524 crore, which aims at offering connectivity between Dahisar-Mira Road-Bhayandar on a 10.41 km long elevated corridor having 9 metro stations. However, the residents are worried about the slow progress on work.

Mumbai Metro-9 will provide inter-connectivity among the existing Western Express Highway (WEH), Western Railway, Mumbai Metro Line 2A (Dahisar - DN Nagar) and Metro Line-7 (Andheri East to Dahisar East). A consortium of Systra (France), Consulting Engineers Group Ltd (CEG) and Systra MVA Consulting (India) has been appointed as general consultants for Metro Line 5 and Line 9. J Kumar Infraprojects had been awarded the civil construction work of Metro 9.
