Metro employees seek complete shutdown of metro rail services

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Employees Union (DMRCEU) has written to the Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to stop metro services in view of the rising death of Metro employees in Delhi-NCR.

Delhi Metro has lost dozens of its employees in the last two months due to spreading Covid-19 in the Delhi-NCR area. On April 28, 2021, DMRC lost its Senior Account Officer who was working in the capacity of Sr. Deputy General Manager in the Finance department.

"This request is being pursued to you amidst complete circumstantial grief and transition where every moment presents a new scene to us. Days after days not only many employees falling sick with Covid positive but also a number of staff passed away. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Employees Union (DMRCEU) is opined this situation among the most distress situation so far. It is also remarkable that comparing to the official of other medical or emergency services departments no DMRC employees have been got vaccinated under the Covid immunization plan," said the letter address to the Managing Director of DMRC by the Secretary, DMRCEU.

"It is high time when your centralized decision requires to be taken to stop metro services for the sake of the life of DMRC employees and their families. The infection rate in the employees is on such a high rise that it is easily reckoned, there would be none to serve the organization after a few days," read the letter.

Requesting complete shutdown of metro services, the DMRCEU further addressed, "It is, therefore, requested to stop the Metro services as early as possible and also start the vaccination of DMRC employees in a speedy manner to revive the metro services in a lively manner." However, new Staff Council members of DMRC requesting for weekly closure of metro services.

It is pertinent to mention here that Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) has also lost its Public Relation Officer on April 23, 2021 due to Covid-19 infection.
