Metro construction restarted in major Indian cities

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): With the beginning of lockdown 4.0, the government has given some relaxation to the major infrastructure and construction industry to restart construction activities that were closed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Home Affairs in its latest guidelines has given relaxation to resume construction activities across the country with certain measures with effect from May 18, 2020. Here is recent progress from the various metro construction sites.

Delhi Metro Phase IV

KEC-CCECC JV has restarted work on 21 May 2020 at their casting yard in Mundka for the construction of 12.375 km elevated extension of Magenta Line (Line 8) between the Vikaspuri Ramp and Haiderpur-Badli Mor Station. The two civil contract package DC-01 and DC-02 of Delhi Metro Phase IV were awarded to KEC-CCECC JV by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in last year. Whereas YFC Projects has also resumed development works at their casting yard to facilitate the construction of a 4.28 km section (Sangam Vihar – Saket G Block) of Aerocity–Tughlakabad Line which was awarded to the company under civil contract package DC-04 of Delhi Metro Phase IV project.

Bangalore Metro Phase II

Vascon Engineers which was awarded the contract to design and construct Kadugodi Depot has restarted site preparation activities for the construction of Kadugodi Depot in Whitefield. The depot is part of Phase II of the Bangalore Metro Rail project. This depot will feed metro trains on Kadugodi Depot on the 15.257 km long Baiyyappanahalli – Whitefield extension of the Purple Line. On 21 May, site workers from L&T construction have completed the first major concrete pour at Shivajinagar Station which is being constructed on Pink Line (Reach 6) of Bangalore Metro project. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has recently allowed Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) to cut over 165 trees to build five metro stations of Pink Line (Reach 6) of phase 2 of Bangalore Metro Rail project.

Nagpur Metro

Construction activity on the Nagpur Metro Rail project has been resumed and the workers of Afcons Infrastructure have restarted work on the construction of the North-South link which is part of Sitabuldi - Automotive Square. They have started work of filling-up piles and erecting the pillars on the Indora Square-Automotive Square route.

Pune Metro Line - 3

Tata Reality Infrastructure Limited has restarted geotechnical soil investigation work to begin construction of Line-3 of the Pune Metro Rail project. The contract for development of 23.3 km long Line-3 (Hinjawadi – Civil Court) was awarded to the consortium of Tata Reality-Siemens JV on a DBFOT basis.

Mumbai Metro

J Kumar Infraprojects – CRTG JV team has resumed their work for the construction of a 6.079 km long section (Swami Samarth Nagar - Shyam Nagar) of Mumbai Metro Line-6 (Swami Samarth Nagar - Vikhroli). The team has erected the first U-girder on 22nd May 2020. The civil contract package (BC-06) worth Rs 867.75 crore was awarded to the consortium of J Kumar Infraprojects and CRTG on 7th August 2018. On another side, SUCG Infrastructure has resumed tunneling works on a 5.06 km section (Mumbai Central – Worli) of Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ). The SUGC has taken over tunneling works from Doğuş-Soma JV which was awarded for package UGC-03 of the Mumbai Metro Rail project (Line 3). SUCG will build tunnels - 837m in up line and 830m in down line - between Mumbai Central and Mahalaxmi stations. Power Transmission & Distribution vertical of Larsen & Toubro Limited has commenced delivery of power supply equipment for Mumbai Metro Line 7.

Kanpur Metro

The AFCONS Infrastructure team has resumed the construction work of the 8.7 km long 'first priority corridor (IIT Kanpur-Moti Jheel)' of the Kanpur Metro Rail project.

Kochi Metro

Kochi Metro Rail Limited has resumed construction work on the Thykoodam-Petta stretch of Line 1 of the Kochi Metro Rail project.

Ahmedabad Metro

Construction work at the Gyaspur depot and the two casting yards under the Ahmedabad Metro Rail project have been resumed. However, work on major construction sites has not yet restarted as the metro rail stretch passes through containment zones.

Delhi-Meerut RRTS project

KEC–CCECC JV has restarted construction activities for building 7.3 km viaduct, from the Sahibabad Ramp to Ghaziabad Station along with two elevated RRTS stations at Sahibabad and Ghaziabad. On another side, APCO Infra – CRFG JV has also resumed the constriction activities for building a 10.3 km viaduct from Ghaziabad Station to the Duhai Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) crossing, with 2 elevated stations at Guldhar and Duhai. Both sections are part of the 18 km ‘priority corridor’ section of the 82.15 km Delhi–Meerut RRTS Smart Line.
