Ahmedabad (Urban Transport News): The board of directors of
Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar And Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Limited on Saturday meeting, has approved the change of the company name from MEGA Company Limited to Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited. MEGA Company Managing Director Dr. I.P. Gautam shared this information after the board meeting. The new name of the company has also been updated on its website at the beginning of the new year.
“The new name will be GMRC and we will officially announce it within a week. In line with other agencies incorporated to execute Metro Rail projects across various states, we have decided to transform MEGA to GMRC,” said IP Gautam, managing director MEGA Company Limited.
“This is to ensure that the agency would be capable to execute Metro Rail projects in other cities of Gujarat. And, doesn't remain confined to Metro Rail project in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar,” he added.
The Central Government is a notification said that in each state there will be one Company in form of SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) to implement the metro rail projects in the state.
Gautam said that the move is followed by the notification of central government. Change in the company's name was initiated in November 2018. The approval from the central government on the name change came on November 22. “This one will be a mother company and then for other cities, there will be subsidiary companies operating. Same directors now will be handling for different projects like Phase 2 of the current project. Structure and stake will remain the same as per the existing company. This is a successful model running elsewhere in other parts also,” he added further.
After the name change, the MEGA Company Limited will be known as Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) Limited and city's project will be called Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, likewise, Surat's project would be Surat Metro Rail Project under the head of GMRC Limited.
The Gujarat government is planning to have Metro rail system for Surat city and Dholera. So all the three upcoming Metro rail projects will be under one umbrella.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) will be the third in the country to handle other respective metro projects in the state, after Maharastra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) and Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation.
