Larsen & Toubro awarded civil contract worth Rs 1,035 crore for Chennai Metro Phase 2

Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on May 12, 2021, issued a contract worth Rs 1,035.30 crores to Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) for the construction of an 8 km elevated stretch from Power House to Porur Junction under 26.01 km long Corridor 4  (Light House – Poonamallee) of Phase 2 of Chennai Metro Rail Project.

The scope of work includes the construction of Elevated Metro Stations at Power House, Vadapalani, Saligramam, Avichi School, Alwartiru Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, Alapapakkam Junction, Porur Junction & Associated Viaduct from Chainage 10027.102 to Chainage 17982.240 & all associated works.

The tender for the aforesaid work under contract package C4-ECV01 was issued in July 2020. Technical bids were opened in October 2020, and financial bids were opened on December 8, 2020. A total of three bidders viz. Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. – KEC International Joint Venture (HCC-KEC JV) and NCC Limited have submitted their bids. 

According to the financial bid results, L&T emerged as the lowest bidder (L1) by quoting Rs 1,035.30 crores against CMRL's estimate of Rs 800 crores. L&T also emerged as the lowest bidder in Contract package C4-ECV02 but the tender is awarded to the second-lowest bidder Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. – KEC International Joint Venture (HCC-KEC JV). The new terms & conditions, CMRL does not allow the same contractor to work on the same line. Due to this clause, L&T has lost two big tickets from Chennai Metro Rail Project.

Now Larsen & Toubro Ltd  (L&T) has been given 36 months deadline to complete the aforesaid work. 

Corridor 4 of Chennai Metro's Phase 2 will connect Light House to Poonamallee Bus Depot with 31 stations.
