New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a resolute effort to combat climate change and embrace sustainability, the Ministry of Railways in India has set an ambitious goal to transform Indian Railways into Green Railways by 2030. This visionary initiative aligns with a broader strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Several significant measures have been undertaken, focusing on railway electrification, enhanced energy efficiency, green certifications, and a transition to renewable energy sources.

One of the standout initiatives is the integration of solar power, encompassing both non-traction and traction applications. The total installed solar capacity stands at an impressive 216.36 MW. Noteworthy is the substantial growth, with 71.37 MW added in 2023 alone, consisting of 21.37 MW rooftop and 50 MW land-based installations. This underscores Indian Railways' commitment to embracing cleaner energy alternatives.

Wind power has also emerged as a crucial component of the green strategy, with a total installed capacity of 103.4 MW. The railways have demonstrated a consistent effort to enhance renewable energy sources, with 92.9 MW commissioned between 2014 and 2023.

In a significant move towards international collaboration, Indian Railways, the Government of India, and the United States Agency for International Development/India (USAID/India) inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 14, 2023. This collaboration is specifically geared towards advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency, underlining a global commitment to reducing carbon footprints.

As Indian Railways continues to forge ahead on its green journey, these initiatives mark a paradigm shift towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for one of the world's largest railway networks.
