New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a strategic move to bolster India's tourism and environmental initiatives, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Monday a substantial government investment of Rs 60,000 crore by 2047. This significant funding will be directed towards the expansion of river cruise tourism and the development of eco-friendly vessels.
Sonowal revealed that a substantial portion of the investment, amounting to Rs 45,000 crore, will be dedicated to enhancing river cruise tourism. The ambitious plan aims to increase passenger capacity from the current 2 lakh to an impressive 15 lakh by the year 2047. Speaking on the sidelines of the first Inland Waterways Development Council meeting, the minister highlighted the potential for job creation and economic growth resulting from these investments.
In tandem with the focus on tourism, the government plans to invest an additional Rs 15,000 crore in the development of green transport over the next decade. This initiative aims to create 1,000 eco-friendly vessels and ferries, contributing to sustainable transportation solutions. The total projected investment of Rs 60,000 crore by 2047 will be executed through the public-private partnership (PPP) model, emphasizing collaboration for efficient and impactful results.
The Inland Waterways Development Council meeting, attended by officials from approximately 20 states and Union territories, witnessed the unveiling of the 'Harit Nauka' guidelines for the green transition of inland vessels. Additionally, the River Cruise Tourism Roadmap 2047 was presented, outlining the long-term vision for the sector. The meeting, conducted on a cruise vessel, aimed to streamline and advance the development of waterways by fostering collaboration between states and central government agencies.
Key topics covered during the day-long meeting included fairway development, private sector engagement, optimization of cargo transport efficiency in Inland Water Transport (IWT), promotion and development of eco-friendly vessels for passenger transportation, and the economic advantages of river cruise tourism. The West Bengal transport secretary was among the officials in attendance, seeking assistance for dredging some rivers. In response, the Inland Waterways Authority of India pledged support for dredging and the construction of approximately 20 community jetties, which will be handed over to the state.
The government's substantial investment in river cruise tourism and green vessels development reflects a proactive approach towards sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. The infusion of funds, guided by the PPP model, is expected to not only transform India's waterways but also create a significant economic impact, generating employment opportunities and fostering a greener, more sustainable future.
