Govt of India unveils action plan for development of 26 National Waterways

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): On December 15, 2023, the Government of India announced a comprehensive action plan for the development of 26 strategically selected National Waterways (NWs). The initiative, declared under the National Waterways Act, of 2016, encompasses a total of 111 waterways, including five existing and 106 new ones, spread across 24 states.

Developmental Focus on 26 Key National Waterways

In a significant move, the government has prioritized the development of the 26 most viable National Waterways, emphasizing shipping and navigation. The first phase of this ambitious plan is underway, with 20 National Waterways, including NW 5 Dharma-Paradip via Mangalagadi to Pankapal in Odisha, taking the forefront. This specific waterway spans 233 kilometers.

Government Initiatives in Odisha for Cargo Shipments

In Odisha, the government has implemented various measures to enhance inland waterways for cargo shipments and promote a water-based transport system. These initiatives include:

Thalweg Survey: The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) conducts monthly Thalweg surveys from Pankapal to Dhamra via Mangalgadi up to Paradip, covering 212 line kilometers in Phase-I. This survey aims to monitor waterways and identify the least available depth in the navigation channel.

Project Reports and Modifications: IWAI has undertaken detailed project reports for the construction of weirs, barrages, and modification of bridges to facilitate the development of NW-5 and NW-64.

High-Tension Line Raising:  The government of Odisha has been entrusted with the task of raising high-tension lines to ensure safe navigation clearance for the passage of Inland Water Transport (IWT) vessels.

Public-Private Partnership: IWAI is actively involved in the development and operationalization of NW-5 and NW-64 through public-private partnership mode. Exploring the formation of a special-purpose vehicle for coal movement is also under consideration.

Gypsum Movement: The movement of gypsum from the IFFCO plant to Paradip Port Authority commenced on April 26, 2022, via NW-5 and NW-64. A substantial quantity of gypsum and other commodities, totaling 8,06,053 MT and 19,99,362 MT respectively, has been transported through NW-5, NW-64, and NW-23 in Odisha.

List of 26 National Waterways Projects for Development

The government's action plan includes the development of 26 National Waterways, each strategically chosen for its economic significance. These waterways, spanning various states, aim to enhance connectivity and facilitate efficient transportation. The list includes NWs such as the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System, Brahmaputra River, West Coast Canal, Krishna River, and many more.

In conclusion, the government's proactive approach towards developing National Waterways reflects a commitment to bolstering inland water transportation and fostering economic growth. The comprehensive action plan, coupled with strategic initiatives in Odisha, sets the stage for a transformative period in India's water-based transportation system.
