Government plans light metro rail system for Gorakhpur, Meerut and Prayagraj

Lucknow, India (Urban Transport News): The Uttar Pradesh government has started work towards running light metro in three cities of the state, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, and Meerut. A detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared for these cities. The Housing Department has started work on it. The new DPR will be sent to the central government after approval from the cabinet.

The state government wants to run metro rail to provide better public transport facilities in cities. Gorakhpur and Prayagraj cities are not eligible for metro rail projects as per the norms of the new Metro Rail Policy of Union Government. That is why work has been started on the plan to run the light metro rail in these two cities. A revised DPR will also be prepared to run the light metro rail in Prayagraj.

The DPR was prepared for the metro rail project in Meerut, but it was halted after the commencement of construction work of the Delhi-Meerut RRTS project. A fresh DPR will now be prepared for the light metro rail system for Meerut city. Light metro proposal for Gorakhpur has been prepared. After making the revised DPR, it will be sent to the Central Government cabinet for approval. The light metro rail project will be started after getting approval from the state as well as the central government.

The work of preparing DPR for running 10 km of ropeway on four routes in Varanasi is in the final stage. An official of the Housing Department says that after its introduction in four cities, people will get better facilities of public transport.
