GMR to invest ₹500 crore in Hyderabad Airport Metro Project

Hyderabad, India (Urban Transport News): The GMR group is planning to invest Rs 519.52 crores in the proposed Airport Metro Link in Hyderabad by the Telangana government for connectivity to the aerodrome from various parts of the city.

As per a consultation paper on the tariff revision for the third control period (April 2021 to March 2026) recently proposed by Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (HIAL), issued by Airports Economic Regulatory Authority the GMR Group which is operating Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) will be investing Rs 519.52 by 2024.

The estimated cost of the Hyderabad Airport Metro project would be around Rs 5,000 crore of which HIAL's contribution would be in the range of Rs 500 Crores (10 percent of the project cost) which is equivalent to the estimated cost of metro connectivity within the airport precinct.

The Telangana government has conveyed its approval for the extension of a metro rail link to RGIA from various parts of the city under phase II of the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project.

To implement this project, the state government has already formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named Hyderabad AirportMetro Limited (HAML) in March 2018 which is separate from Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL). The new SPV would be responsible for the development, construction, operations and management of the Airport Metro link.

The SPV will also be responsible for carrying out planning, designing, coordination and monitoring of integrated townships, shopping malls, commercial complexes and other infrastructure facilities and will look at ways to decongest the city and undertake transit-oriented development.

The HAML will be jointly promoted by HMRL with 51% share and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) with 49% share.

The 31-km long Airport Metro link will connect Raidurg to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) via eight metro stations proposed at Bio-Diversity Junction, Nanakramguda, Narsingi, TS Police Academy, Rajendranagar, Shamshabad, Airport Cargo and Airport Terminal. The detailed project report (DPR) of this line was prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited in 2019.
