New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): In a groundbreaking move to promote sustainable logistics, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Blue Dart, India’s leading express logistics service provider, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce an innovative urban logistics service. This partnership, the first of its kind in South Asia, marks a significant step toward reducing road congestion, curbing emissions, and enhancing the efficiency of urban freight transportation.
Under the new collaboration, Blue Dart will transport cargo via Delhi Metro trains during non-peak hours, utilizing available metro capacity to handle time-sensitive shipments. This solution not only optimizes metro resources but also reduces dependency on road transport, alleviating congestion and reducing vehicular emissions in the bustling city of Delhi.
“This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to environmental stewardship,” said a DMRC spokesperson. “By leveraging the metro infrastructure for urban freight, we aim to create a more sustainable, efficient, and green solution for logistics in Delhi-NCR.”
The collaboration comes at a time when metro systems worldwide, such as Madrid Metro, are exploring ways to utilize unused capacity for freight transport. DMRC is already engaging with Madrid Metro to exchange insights and best practices, paving the way for a more efficient and eco-friendly model of urban freight transportation.
By integrating first-mile and last-mile connectivity through metro-enabled logistics solutions, along with establishing Micro Parcel Hubs at metro stations, the project aims to enhance supply chain efficiency while reducing road traffic and urban pollution. The initiative will repurpose metro premises as logistics hubs, facilitating a seamless flow of goods across Delhi-NCR.
As part of its long-term vision, DMRC plans to expand the urban freight network to additional metro stations, setting new standards for sustainable and efficient cargo transportation in metropolitan areas. The collaboration also seeks to address global challenges in urban logistics while promoting lower carbon emissions and faster delivery timelines.
“This partnership with DMRC is a testament to Blue Dart's commitment to innovation and sustainability in logistics. We are excited to contribute to reducing urban congestion and pollution while providing our customers with faster, more reliable services,” said a Blue Dart spokesperson.
Together, DMRC and Blue Dart are reshaping the future of urban logistics, combining cutting-edge technology and environmental sustainability to deliver a greener, smarter, and more efficient solution for cargo movement in India’s metropolitan areas.
