Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) on July 26, 2021 has issued e-tender notice for the procurement of 210 standard guage metro coaches (70 metro trainsets) for Chennai Metro's Phase 2 Project. This is the second tender issued by the CMRL for the procurement of Rolling Stock Trains.
Design, Manufacture, Supply, Testing, Commissioning of Standard Gauge Metro Rolling Stock (Electric Multiple Units) (210 cars) and Training of personnel.
These 70 train-sets of 3 coaches will be deployed on upcoming 45.813 km Corridor-3 (Madhavaram – SIPCOT 2) and 47 km Corridor-5 (Madhavaram – Sholinganallur).This package will be funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
As per information shared by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they have planned to run driverless (unattended train operation) metro trains in its Phase 2 corridors.
Earlier, CMRL had invited e-bids for the procurement of 78 coaches under contract package (Phase II/ARE03) in December 2020. Technical bids for this contract is scheduled to open on September 16, 2021 to reveal the name of bidders. The trains procured under this contract will be deployed on upcoming 26.09 km Corridor-4 (Light House – Poonamallee Bus Depot).
CMRL has also planned to run 42 more trains on Corridor 3 and Corridor 5 of Chennai Metro's Phase 2 on lease basis.
