Chennai Metro receives single bid for procurement of 42 Trains on lease basis

Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) recently revealed that the authority has received single bid against its Expression of Interest (EOI) notice issued for leasing out 126 coaches (42 metro trainsets) for Phase 2 corridors.

According to CMRL, Titagarh Wagons Limited is the only rolling stock firm that submitted thier Expression of Interest (EOI) to supply 126 metro cars on lease basis.

The scope of work includes supply of 126 cars (42 trainsets of 3 carsh each) on lease basis for Chennai Metro's Phase II network and maintaining these cars during their life cycle against payment of lease/rental charges by CMRL on the basis of hourly running of trainsets for passenger operation. 

The EOI (Phase – II / ARE04) was published in August 2021 with a plan to lease out 42 trains of 3 cars each for a period of 39 years on Chennai Metro's upcoming corridors i.e. Line 3 (Madhavaram – SIPCOT 2, 45.8 km) and Line 5 (Madhavaram – Sholinganallur, 47 km). The contract period includes 4 years of initial supply & commissioning and 35 years for the rolling stock’s life cycle.

Beside this, CMRL has also issued two seprate tenders for the procurement of 210 metro cars and 78 metro cars for its Line 3&5 and Line 4 respectively. Alstom, BEML and Titagarh have submitted their bids for supply of 78 metro cars for Line 4. However, technical bids of another tender package not yet opened.

It is pertinent to mention here that Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited had earlier exercise leasing option for procurement of trains but the proposal is hold-up without any further action.
