Advisory council not agrees on metro and mono rail in Chandigarh

Chandigarh (Urban Transport News): The 5th meeting of the Administrator’s Advisory Council was held yesterday under the chairmanship of V.P. Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T Chandigarh at Hotel Mount view, Chandigarh.

Out of the 10 Standing Committees, 6 standing committees have already placed their recommendations in the previous advisory council meetings. The Chairman of the remaining 4 Standing Committees on Environment, Health, Urban Planning & Heritage Preservation and Transportation made presentations of the recommendations of the respective committees, which were discussed at length by the council.

The Even after a long discussion in the Advisory Council meeting of Administrator on the option of reducing the increasing traffic in the city and on the option of strong public transport, no concrete decision could be reached. In the meeting, the Transport Committee gave detailed information about the Mass Rapid Transport System, Metro, Light Rail, Mono Rail, BRTS and other modes of Transportation.

What will be the cost of the option, how beneficial it will be to the city and how effective it will be in the future, all these discussed in the meeting. After the presentation, the council members gave their opinion. Members' opinions were divided in favor of Metro, Mono Rail and Light rail. On this, Administrator VP Singh Bednore said that the views of all the members are deeply discussed.

If any sub-committee has to be created, then it should be made. Whatever is decided, it should be done with a long discussion. Also it is important to take care of expenses and city heritage too. After the ground level detail study, the final option should be selected.

The committee also suggested the facility of the prepaid booth at ISBT, railway station and airport. Although some places already have a prepaid booth facility available. With the parking problem and the parking space in the green area, with the other option to discuss it.

Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher said that Metro and Mono Rail are the best options for the city. Kher said that Punjab and Haryana may run Metro in their area till Chandigarh. After that, the monorail will be used further. This will save the city from excavation itself.

The meeting was attended by Kirron Kher, Member of Parliament, Chandigarh, Satya Pal Jain, Additional Solicitor General of India, Rajesh Kalia, Mayor Chandigarh, Manoj Parida, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, Arun Kumar Gupta, IAS, Principal Secretary Home, Ajoy Kumar Sinha, IAS, Finance Secretary, J.M Balamurugan, IAS, Principal Secretary to Governor, Chandigarh, Pawan Kumar Bansal, Ex-MP, members of the Advisory Council and senior officers of Chandigarh Administration.
