Alstom signs €150 Million contract for supply of Electric Locomotives in Romania

Bucuresti, Romania (Urban Transport News): In a monumental stride towards sustainable mobility, Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a groundbreaking contract with the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF). The €150 million deal includes the delivery of 16 Traxx 3 MS electric locomotives and an extensive 20-year maintenance and repair service. This collaboration not only strengthens Alstom's 30-year presence in Romania but also aligns with the country's commitment to advancing greener and smarter mobility solutions.

The contract, signed on January 29, 2024, encompasses the delivery of cutting-edge electric locomotives to ARF and extends Alstom's collaboration within the rolling stock sector. The deal is not only about the locomotives; it involves a comprehensive 20-year maintenance and repair period, which is extendable by a further 20 years through an additional agreement.

Gabriel Stanciu, Managing Director of Alstom Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova, expressed his delight, stating, "I am delighted to see that Alstom’s rolling stock offer in Romania is being extended with electric locomotives for our esteemed customer ARF. The new locomotives will significantly contribute to the country’s journey towards sustainable mobility, aligning with Alstom's commitment to advancing greener and smarter mobility solutions worldwide."

The four-axle electric locomotives are designed to reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h and can efficiently tow up to 16 passenger cars. Equipped with Alstom’s state-of-the-art onboard ERTMS system, these locomotives prioritize optimal efficiency, safety, and security while ensuring full interoperability. The focus is on enhancing mobility within and between Romania’s major cities, promising a transformative impact on the country's transportation landscape.

The Traxx locomotives boast a flexible design based on a robust, modular platform approach compatible with various applications, including single or multi-country freight and passenger transport. Available in various configurations such as AC, DC, and multi-system, this product delivers increased operational performance and reliability with higher energy efficiency. Extended maintenance intervals further improve availability, making them a reliable choice for sustainable and efficient rail transportation.

The Traxx locomotives have a stellar track record, having been homologated in 20 countries and covering a total annual distance of more than 300 million kilometers. With over 2,700 units sold since the year 2000, their operational performance, reliability, and energy efficiency stand as a testament to their success.

Alstom's influence in Romania extends far beyond this contract. With nearly 30 years of activity, the company has become a market leader in railway electrification and signalling solutions. From implementing signalling and electrification solutions on the Rhine-Danube railway corridor to contributing to the second metro system in Cluj Napoca, Alstom has played a pivotal role in shaping the country's transportation infrastructure.

The ongoing contract for maintenance services for the Bucharest metro fleet, valid until 2036, further solidifies Alstom's commitment to the long-term development and efficiency of Romania's railways.

The Alstom-ARF collaboration marks a significant milestone not only in the realm of electric locomotives and maintenance services but also in the broader context of sustainable and smart mobility solutions. The technological prowess of Traxx locomotives, combined with Alstom's extensive experience, positions this collaboration as a beacon of progress in Romania's journey towards greener and more efficient transportation.
