RITES submits revised DPR of Jammu and Srinagar Metro Rail projects

New Delhi, India (Urban Transport News): The Railway Consultancy firm, RITES Limited has submitted the final detailed project report (DPR) for Jammu and Srinagar Metro projects which is to be completed by the year 2024. The estimated cost of both projects is around Rs 10,599 crore.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister said that it will be the first project of its kind in this region. Since its independence, this region has experienced significantly slow growth in terms of the transportation system. Only after 20 years of independence, this city saw its first train.

He appreciated Modi's government and said that it became possible and they succeeded in making a breakthrough by introducing a metro train project because of their support.

This project will play a vital role in enhancing the transportation system of the cities as it will be providing cost-effective and sustainable public transport.

After the completion of the project, Jammu and Srinagar will be the first two non-major cities to have metro lines.

He said the metro rail line will only have elevated corridors because underground tunnels are not feasible in the region. And these elevated corridors will have positive impacts on various aspects such as the environment, economy, and social.

He added that the Light Metro transit system will run 17 hours a day throughout the year in Jammu. But in the case of Srinagar, during summers it will run 17 hours a day and during winters only 14 hours a day.

The proposed metro is going to have modern lightweight coaches made from stainless steel and aluminum body, with an air conditioning system.

Additionally, Minister said that by 2021, the highest railway bridge of the world is coming up on river Chenab in Reasi which will be probably inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
