Nearly 1000 metres metro track laid on first priority corridor of Kanpur Metro

Kanpur, India (Urban Transport News): Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (UPMRC) has laid down the Metro Track up to 1000 meters (1 km) on the Priority Corridor i.e. being constructed between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel. The track laying work had been commenced from IIT on May 11, 2021 and now it has reached up to Kalyanpur Metro Station.

Metro engineers are fabricating Rails of several meters by welding 18-18 meters long segments. These rails segments are welded with the Rail Welding Machine and then laid down on the track.

Expressing satisfaction over the pace of track laying work, Managing Director Shri Kumar Keshav said:

Various system contractors have already been deployed in Kanpur and system works are under progress. Track laying is also being executed at a considerable pace. On the mainline of the Kanpur Metro Project, a ballast-less track is being laid. The ballast-less track asks for the least maintenance and offers better stability & ride quality than the Ballast Track.

How Metro Track differs from Rail?

‘Metro Track’ is a complete system, whereas ‘Rail’ is just a part of that system. The track system comprises elements like Track Plinth, Rail Sheet, Rubber Pad, Fasteners etc. other than Rails.

The ballastless tracks are used in the Metro projects as they don’t have ballast (stones) and the least maintenance is required. During the long 15-16 hours of train operations, Metro trains are operated on very tight frequency so there is almost no scope of maintenance during these hours and that’s why an efficient system is needed which can provide the good ridership with the least maintenance requirements. Besides this advantage, there are additional benefits of long life-cycle, stability & ride comfort with such tracks.

The civil construction work on the 9-km long Priority Corridor in Kanpur was started on November 15, 2019, which was inaugurated by Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Since then the construction works of the project are being executed with remarkable pace by UPMRC’s engineers to ensure the availability of a world-class Metro service for Kanpur City in the minimum time frame possible.
