Mumbaikars can travel on Mumbai Metro line 2A and line 7 from October

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) on May 28, 2021, informed that two under-construction Metro lines — Metro-2A (Dahisar-Aarey) and Metro-7 (Dahanukarwadi to Aarey) — will be operational from January 2022. "Today, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner with Director System & DMRC took a review meeting of signalling & telecommunications work being done by M/s Alstom. Alstom assured that phase 1 will be ready for commission in October," said MMRDA officials on Friday.

“Both the lines will become fully operational in January next year. It will reduce the load of local trains by about 10-12% and will also reduce travel time significantly. We will start the trial run from Monday and this will be completed by October. After that, the first phase will become operational from October onwards,” said RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray will inaugurate the trial run on May 31.

In the first Phase I, the commercial run of the metro train from Dhanukarwadi (formerly known as Kamraj Nagar) and Aarey will start from October this year and in Phase 2 the entire metro lines of 2A & 7 will become operational from January 2022.

According to MMRDA, the total cost for the two metro lines is approximately Rs 12,800 crore, of which around Rs 6,000 crore have been spent to date. It is estimated that 9,20,000 people will be travelling on both these lines once operational. Earlier, the deadline was set to December 2020 but due to the covid-19 pandemic and lockdown situations, the work has been delayed.

The MMRDA will use a BEML-make 6-coach metro train for the trial run. This train is currently placed in Charkop depot.

Metro Line 2A will span 18.6 km and connect Dahisar East to Andheri West with 17 elevated stations while Metro Line 7 will span 16.5 km and connect Andheri East to Dahisar East with 13 elevated stations.
