MMRDA to commence work on four new Mumbai metro lines this year

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): Good news for Mumbaikars! The city transport and infrastructure planning body, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is planning to start civil construction work on four new Metro lines on a total 87.6-km-long route in 2020. According to the plan, MMRDA is likely to commence the construction work on the Metro-10 (Gaimukh-Shivaji Nagar, 9.2 km) corridor; Metro-11 (Wadala-General Post Office, 12.7 km) corridor; Metro-12 (Kalyan-Taloja, 20.7-km) corridor; and Metro-14 (Kanjurmarg-Badlapur, 45 km) corridor, which will give a major boost to urban rail connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). RA Rajeev, metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA, on Thursday said:

The target is to complete the construction of 337km of Metro lines in MMR by 2026. We are also looking at making two lines, Metro-2A (Dahisar-DN Nagar), Line-2B DN Nagar to Mandale) and Metro-7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East), operational by the end of this year.

Commenting on the current development, Sonia Sethi, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA, said:

The amount of work that was completed in Delhi in 20 years is being done in Mumbai in a span of five to seven years. Last year itself, we had undertaken work on a total 146-km-long Metro routes.

The metropolitan commissioner said that the authority (MMRDA) has also completed 25% of civil works on the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), a sea-bridge which will connect Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The authority has also appointed a private firm to conduct a study on the traffic issues on the Western Express Highway (WEH).

We are also looking at opening the Kalanagar flyover by March and aim to complete the work of the Santacruz-Chembur link road and the Bandra-Kurla Complex-Vakola junction this year. The work on the Metro Bhavan in Aarey will also start soon.

It is pertinent to mention here that the MMRDA is also planning to commence the metro trail run on Mumbai Metro's Line 2A and Line 7 in September this year. The rolling stock contractor, BEML is expected to deliver the first train to MMRDA in the last week of August. In last year on September 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the mock-up coach of the metro train coach deigned for Line 2A and Line 7 corridors of the Mumbai Metro Rail network.
