HMRTC to implement Gurugram-Manesar-Bawal Metro rail corridor

Gurugram, India (Urban Transport News): After approving major changes in the existing alignment plan of the proposed Huda City Centre-Gurugram Railway Station Metro corridor, the Haryana Government has decided to appoint Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) to implement the revised Gurugram-Manesar-Bawal metro project.

According to the revised plan, the metro route will now start from the Gurugram railway station, instead of the Huda City Centre (yellow line of Delhi Metro Rail Network), and run up to Manesar in the first phase. Earlier, the government had assigned this project to state-owned body Haryana State Industrial & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (HSIIDC) but lack of funds and delay in implementation of the project, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has decided to handover this project to Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC). The decision was taken in a meeting held on last week. A senior official from Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said:

The project will now be developed by HMRTC instead of HSIIDC. Changes to the route suggested by the chief minister are being incorporated into the design. The revised route would start at the railway station and go through Vatika Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Sadar Bazar, IMT Manesar and Pachgaon. There are congestion issues around the Sadar area, but we are chalking out ways to address these problems.

According to the earlier plan, the metro link between Huda City Centre and Manesar was to be developed in the first phase and the route connecting Manesar and Bawal in the second phase. The estimated cost of the 30-km long first phase was pegged to Rs 9,000 crore. In the meeting, the plan for the metro link between Huda City Centre and Sector 23 was also discussed. The official had also proposed changes to the spur between Dwarka and Gurugram. The detailed project report (DPR) for the Gurugram metro route has been sent to the Centre for approval and work on the ground is expected to begin this summer.
