GMRC completes underground tunneling work of Ahmedabad Metro Rail project

Ahmedabad, India (Urban Transport News): On Friday, Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) released an official statement regarding the completion of underground stations and tunnelling work of the Ahmadabad Metro Rail Project.

Officials said that after the retuning of the migrant workers project caught its pace and the tunnelling work was completed on 25th August itself.

Additionally, under Phase-1 the total length of Ahmadabad Metro's underground section is only 6.51 km.

According to the GMRC officials, the tunnelling work from the station Apparel Park to the station Shahpur took almost 3 years for the completion

Under the Phase-1 project, the 40 km is the total length of the metro lines. And it's underground section will pass under the ASI protected heritage structures without disturbing them aur their context areas.

Furthermore, the construction of these towers is done by the two renowned companies L&T and Afcons Infrastructures. Finishing works are still pending in the underground section.

Tunnelling work is fully finished; laying of tracks, electrification and construction of underground metro stations is still pending.

According to the updates, the enormous work of tunnelling included scooping of massive amount of soil and which was done by using Tunnel Boring Machines and 2 lakh man days.

The tunnelling was completed by scooping out 3.3 lakh cubic metre of earth.

Pandemic has led to many delays in this project because migrants returned to their homes in the month of March and April.

Hence, this affected the strength of workforce and decreased it resulting in the incapability to complete the project under assigned deadlines.

However, after the government announced the unlock many of the workers were called back to Ahmedabad.

The returning of the migrant workers was necessary because they were specialized in operating TBMs and building tunnels. However, after the unlock the project caught its pace.
