First U-Girder erected on priority corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail project

Kanpur, India (Urban Transport News): The project team of Afcon Infrastructure and Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) today launched the first U-Girder on 9-km priority corridor of Kanpur Metro Rail project.

The first U-girder of the project has been erected for the Metro viaduct on Pillar No. 17 and 18 near IIT Kanpur on the Priority Section of Kanpur Metro project in the presence of Rajendra Kumar Tiwari, Chief Secretary, Government of Uttar Pradesh along with Kumar Keshav, Managing Director, UPMRC and other senior officials.

"The U-girders provide the top deck of Metro viaduct on which track, traction, and signaling system are laid for movement of Metro trains. A total of 638 U-girders are to be laid on the 9 KMs long Priority Section (IIT Kanpur-Motijheel). The erection of the girder in just 8½ months since the start of the piling work for the project, will be a step forward in the construction of Kanpur Metro Rail project," said in the official release.

Under the supervision of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), the civil works of the Kanpur Metro project are being executed at a very fast pace. So far, 1,300 piles completed on the priority section of the project. 

Foundation is also ready for the workshop shed of Kanpur Metro's depot at Government Polytechnic's land by KSM Bashir Mohd and Sons. This depot will provide stabling and maintenance facilities to Bombardier's Rolling Stock and feed metro trains for Corridor I of Kanpur Metro Rail project.

The Kanpur Metro is the first such metro project in the country where double T-girders are being used to prepare the concourse level of the Metro stations to speed up the civil construction and at the same time enhance the beauty of the structure.
