Construction work commenced for underground stretch of Kanpur Metro project

Kanpur, India (Urban Transport News): The project team of Gulermak - Sam (India) Builtwell JV has started the preliminary work for the 8.621 km underground metro stretch of the Kanpur Metro Rail project on May 22, 2021. The team started the work at the proposed station located in Naveen Market after Bhoomi Pujan. The investigation of sewer, water pipeline, electric cable, telecom cable has been started. The new market will be the second station en route to the underground metro in Kanpur.

The work of the priority corridor of the metro is going on at a rapid pace and there is a preparation to run the train on it in January next year. Along with this, the work started on the underground route as well. Between Chuniganj to Nayaganj, the four metro stations are to be built at Chuniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj station. 

Before commencing tunneling work the team will have to first do utility diversion. Water lines, sewer lines, electricity and telephone cables found under the ground are called utilities in technical language. Now whatever such items will be found at the place of the station, they will be removed from there and shifted to another place. This process is called utility diversion. Metro engineers have started the process of geotechnical investigation works. Under this, soil testing work is going on in the underground corridor. Soon Metro will also do a pressure meter test in the ground. From this, it will be known at which place the soil can withstand so much pressure.

In March 2021, Gulermak - Sam (India) Builtwell JV was awarded a contract worth Rs 769.23 crores for the design and construction of the tunnel from the start of the elevated ramp (after Motijheel station) to end of Nayaganj station including four underground stations and the ramp including architectural finishes E&M, TVS, ECS etc. on Corridor 1 of Phase 1 of Kanpur Metro Rail project. The contractor has to complete the work in 36 months.
