Committee formed to look alternative site for Mumbai Metro 3 car shed

Mumbai, India (Urban Transport News): After staying the constriction work of the metro car shed of Mumbai Metro Line 3 at Aarey Milk Colony in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has now formed a four-member committee to identify viable options to the existing site. In a meeting on Wednesday, the decision was taken to form a four-member committee comprising the additional chief secretary (finance), principal secretary (environment), chairman-cum-managing director of the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) and chief conservator of forests at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

In addition to these four members, two additional members have been appointed as subject experts to look at the technical and forest-related aspects of the car shed. The committee has been given the responsibility to find an alternative site that is more environmentally friendly and economically viable. The current site has a lot of controversies and some of the Activists and environmentalists have said that there were several alternatives to the Aarey site that would be less damaging to the environment.

Souces from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) said that there were five sites had been considered while drawing up the detailed project report and five more had been considered during the technical committee stage. However, all locations were examined on merit but were ruled out on the basis of inadequate land area and technical suitability, environment, legal/ownership constraints and regulatory constraints.

The Activists are also demanding to shift the car shed to a plot in Kanjurmarg, which would serve both Mumbai Metro Line 3 and Line 6. The activists said that the MMRC had cut 2,141 trees at the site without the following procedure In addition to finding an alternate site, the committee will also check whether the due procedure was followed before cutting the 2,141 trees on the Aarey site. The committee will also suggest ways to conserve Aarey forest from future damage. Earlier, just the next day of taking charge of Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray had stayed ongoing construction work at the controversial car shed site.
