CMRL to procure 42 metro trains for Chennai Metro Phase 2 on lease basis for 39 years

Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) for providing 126 cars (42 trainsets of 3 cars each) on a lease basis for Chennai Metro's Phase 2 network and maintaining these cars during their life cycle against payment of lease/rental charges by CMRL on the basis of hourly running of trainsets for passenger operation.

  • Period of Contract: 39 years (including 4 years for initial supply & commissioning of trainsets and balance 35 years for life cycle of Rolling Stock)
  • Pre-EOI Meeting: 26.08.2021 at 11.00 hrs.
  • Last Date of submission/uploading of EOIs: 21.09.2021 till 13.00 hrs.
  • Date and Time of opening of EOIs: 22.09.2021 at 15.00 hrs.

Selection of Bidders

The Evaluation and Determination of Responsiveness of EOI and subsequently RFP submission shall solely be carried out by CMRL.

The companies, corporations, partnerships, consortia, and joint ventures who pass the Initial Eligibility based on submissions with the EOI, shall only be considered as the eligible applicants allowed to participate in the next stage of the project, i.e. RFP.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has planned to procure Rolling Stock (Metro Cars) in three different methods hence issued procurement notices accordingly.

Tender for procurement of 70 train sets (210 cars) for Corridor 3 & Corridor 5 and 26 train sets (78 cars) had already been floated in July 2021 and December 2020 respectively.

According to CMRL, the trains which will be deployed on Phase 2 corridors of Chennai Metro will be different from Phase 1 corridors as they will run driverless trains on upcoming corridors.
