CMRL to begin trial run on Chennai Metro Phase I extension route from March

Chennai, India (Urban Transport News): The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning to commence a metro train trial test run on the 9-km long stretch between Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar from the first week of March 2020. This route is part of the phase I extension of the Chennai Metro Rail project.

Initially, CMRL will run a shunting loco in the underground stretch from Washermanpet to Korukkupet and carry an inspection of the tracks and other systems. “Now, the tracks are being laid in this 9-km stretch in the underground section, the track has already been laid but the work is still on for the elevated section. We are hoping to finish it in an another month.

If it gets completed, then we may do a trial run for the whole stretch and if not, we will certainly run the shunting loco for the underground section alone. During this trial, we will know if there are any problems and what areas need correction,” said a CMRL official, The Hindu quoted. A small section from Washermanpet to Korukkupet alone is underground in this 9 km stretch and after that, the stretch rises above the ground up to Wimco Nagar.

The construction work of stations and installation of some systems is still ongoing on the route. If the loco trial succeeds then CMRL will start a trial run with the shunting loco, and thereafter the trial will commence with self energized trains. However, it may take some time and the actual trial may start from April.

According to plan, Chennai Metro officials are expecting to open this stretch for the public by June, but the beginning of such trials is crucial and only after getting safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), the section could be open for the commercial run.
